Opposition MP claims he was threatened by another lawmaker

KUALA LUMPUR: An Opposition lawmaker has claimed to be threatened by Bukit Gantang MP Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal and his family members.

Without diverging specific details, Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) claimed that the incident happened through a phone call two nights ago.

Quoting Section 9 of the Laws of Malaysia Act 347 Houses of Parliament (Privileges and Powers), Awang said Parliament could take action on the matter.

“When I was threatened, I referred back to this,” he told Parliament on Thursday (Nov 30).

When Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul pressed Awang further, the latter claimed it was the Bukit Gantang MP who threatened him.

Johari however said it was difficult for him to make a decision as any report to Parliament on the matter should be made immediately.

“Bukit Gantang called me that night, how could I update you that night,” Awang said in response.

Johari then asked Awang to file a motion for him to take further action on the matter.

“I need to carry out an investigation. My decision is to file a motion,” Johari said.

Chong Zhemin (PH-Kampar) later asked Awang to lodge a police report.

“Don’t create any perceptions in the House. Let the police investigate,” he said.

On Tuesday (Nov 28), Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal pledged support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Separately, Awang also questioned why Johari was “exceptionally strict” against him in Parliament.

“Don’t be so strict with me. When Hulu Langat (Mohd Sany Hamzan) does anything, it’s fine.

“You’re very emotional with me,” Awang said.

To this, Johari said although they were friends, things would be different once they were seated in the lower House.

“When people elect MPs, they want productivity.

“I can’t entertain everyone, that’s why I have to be strict,” he said.
